Our Story - Personal Experience of Wigs and Hair Loss
As the owner of Beech Grove Wig Boutique, my commitment to providing top-quality wigs and hairpieces for all customers is very personal. This dedication stems from my own experience of hair loss due to Alopecia Totalis.
Losing my hair at the age of eight, I've come to understand the emotional and decision-making challenges that accompany purchasing wigs and hairpieces. I understand that the physical side of hair loss can be a very small part of how it can affect people and indeed the emotional side can be the most challenging part. At the beginning, we often feel that we have lost part of our identity, who we are, who we see in the mirror every day. Often we have very little control over this change. Hair loss can impact our confidence and this is true whether our hair loss is a temporary situation or has a more long term outlook.
Many people describe hair loss as a journey and it does indeed have all those stages of dealing with significant change. In many cases we eventually come to acceptance and control the things we can control. For me this was via doing my best at the things I was able to do and over time my attitude to wigs has changed to enjoying wigs as accessories with so many exciting possibilities. This did take quite a while to get to!
For my clients, talking to someone who has walked the same path is often as important as purchasing a wig or hairpiece, as often you feel like you are the only one. I understand the questions and worries as I have had them myself. I can anticipate the questions you will have when you go home and come to the first hair wash or when you go on holiday. I also learn from my customers, some of whom are as far or further along the journey. The best part of what we do is seeing someone look in the mirror for sometimes the first time in a while and smile and walk out with so much more confidence than before and a spring in their step. Or someone who hasn't been out and about doing their normal activities due to how hair loss has impacted their confidence, reporting back that they are never in anymore! Then further along to see them embrace wigs in the same way as those without hair loss would view wigs - as a world of possibilities.
