Personal Advice on Hair Loss from the Owner
At Beech Grove Wig Boutique, located in the North East of England, we understand the emotional and physical challenges of navigating wigs, hairpieces, and hair loss. This can be true whether your hair loss is a temporary or permanent situation, due to conditions like alopecia, autoimmune disorders, or cancer treatment. As someone with personal experience of alopecia, I speak from the heart and from a place of deep empathy.
“Wonderful, friendly, patient and truly wants to make a difference to people’s lives. She certainly has to mine with her warm heart, experience and knowledge.”

My foremost advice? Always consult a qualified medical professional—your GP would be my first point of contact. They may conduct tests or refer you to a dermatologist, who has the medical training to diagnose and treat various types of hair loss. Unlike trichologists, who are not required to have a medical degree, dermatologists are doctors with years of specialised training in skin, hair, and scalp conditions.
While some people may be tempted by online “lotions and potions,” I would urge caution. An accurate medical diagnosis is often the first step to understanding your hair loss—whether autoimmune, stress-related, or nutritional. Once you have clarity from a medical standpoint, you may wish to explore holistic or complementary options, including those offered by trichologists. If so, please ensure they are appropriately qualified and externally regulated.
The Emotional Side of Hair Loss
Hair loss can be hard to deal with emotionally. Whether you live in Durham, Newcastle, or elsewhere in the North East, I want you to know you’re not alone. The emotional impact of hair loss—the loss of control, changes in self-image, and worry—can be just as significant as the physical symptoms.
Stress can even exacerbate hair loss, creating a cycle that feels hard to break. I think that it is essential to acknowledge these feelings and seek the right kind of support. Whether it’s walking, yoga, meditation, or simply talking to someone who understands, your emotional wellbeing matters.
As someone who has lived with alopecia for decades, I’ve found that everyone’s outlook and reactions are different, as are the ways we find to deal with hair loss. Navigating the road into wigs, hairpieces, and hair loss can be initially daunting, but like all changes, there can be many positives, and for many, wigs and toppers provide this.
In fact often wigs are nicer than our bio hair but I think there is sometimes a difference in approaching wigs from the starting point of hair loss and approaching them as for simply fashion and the beautiful options they provide. When approaching from the former though we often discover the latter.

Supporting You With Empathy
Because I’ve experienced hair loss, I can offer support that’s not just knowledgeable but empathetic. Talking about wigs, hairpieces, and hair loss can be difficult subjects to open up about. I understand the awkwardness of not knowing what to say when people talk about their hair, and the discomfort of sometimes trying to hide the emotional side of what you’re going through.
That’s why I created Beech Grove Wig Boutique—to be a safe, understanding space for people navigating hair loss in the North East of England.
We’re proud to offer 5-star rated service and real, heartfelt support to every customer—whether you’re exploring human hair wigs, synthetic styles, or simply want someone who “gets it” to talk to.
“Beech Grove Wig Boutique is fantastic! The service is tailored to your individual needs. Nothing was too much trouble for them!”

Hair Loss from Alopecia: Treatments and Acceptance
If you’re living with alopecia, you may already know how unpredictable it can be. I’ve tried many treatments over the years and experienced periods of regrowth—but also relapses. For some people, however, hair loss may be a once-in-a-lifetime episode and resolves. There’s promising news on the horizon, such as Ritlecitinib, a new treatment. While I remain cautiously optimistic and informed, I also recognise that for many of us, wigs provide a sense of control and confidence that sometimes unpredictable treatments cannot.
Alopecia can change your sense of identity—but it doesn’t define who you are.
For me, wearing wigs has become a part of my daily life, and I now find joy in experimenting with styles I never would have tried with my own hair. Even if my hair returned, I would continue wearing wigs (partly because as I have gotten older—I never have to go grey or dye my hair due to wigs)—something many of our clients in Newcastle, Durham, and beyond tell me too. Often with long-term hair loss, we find a favourite style, and that becomes our ‘hair’, who we see in the mirror every day, ‘us’.
“They have changed my life.”
