Even though it feels at the moment as though we have had our summer in the UK, and it is only June, if there is more ahead or if you are jetting off to warmer climes for a well earned break, we are here to help you find that perfect style with our Summer Wig Tips and Tricks.
Having worn wigs for over 40 years since childhood, often we who wear wigs can offer more advice on day to day maintenance and summer wig tips and tricks as well as pitfalls to avoid than the simple maintenance instructions you will find on a wig. We have also been on the other side and attended supplier training now that we sell the brands we have worn.
During your consultation you will have the opportunity to ask questions and be guided by us on wig maintenance in a relaxed and tranquil setting. Our consultations are complimentary both for in person and virtual appointments. Learn more about summer wig tips and tricks during your visit.
Over the years we have tried out a range of fibres and styles whilst on holiday and during warmer days wearing wigs here in the UK. Summer wig tips and tricks have become essential during these experiences.
So here are a few of our tips….
Wigs and Heat
People new to wigs often think wearing a wig will be like wearing a wool hat and to be honest, this hasn’t been our experience if you choose the right product. Personally, often what people forget is that a lot of our body heat escapes from our head and so if you are approaching wigs from the starting point of hair loss, it replaces your hair. It is often cold without hair. Sometimes this is more noticeable at night time. We would never ever advise you to wear your wig to bed as it will dramatically decrease the life span of your wig but wearing a scarf or a turban or if you really must wear a wig, wear an old one to bed.
When people leave with their wig or topper and especially if it is synthetic we always stress to avoid sudden blasts of heat such as when opening oven doors or overhead patio heaters. So what happens on holidays?
Synthetic or Human Hair for Poolside?
Keep Your Old Wigs
When on holiday we have tried wearing old human hair wigs for swimming and around the pool and old synthetics. There are pros and cons to both. From our experience, an old human hair will react just like hair in the water and if taped on and with latex areas for a secure fit these are great in that there isn’t the worry of them falling off.
An old synthetic is also great for poolside if you realise that chlorine and swimming will further reduce the look of your wig. They dry quickly and so you get your wig style back as you are sitting pool side. Whereas with human hair it would need to be restyled.
You may alternatively decide not to wear a wig, just be careful to apply sun cream as if you have worn wigs all the time, your skin will not be used to strong sunshine.
The Freedom to Switch Up Your Style
If you tend to stick to the same style, many of us opt for sister wigs – for example we may have a cheaper synthetic in a similar style and colour to our everyday human hair one and over time we will have a collection of old ones we no longer wear every day. Some of the price points and modern styles of synthetic wigs make doing this more cost effective.
If you are comfortable swapping and changing then there are lots of options. Alternatively if you don’t normally swap and change, being on holiday is an ideal situation in which to give it a try and appreciate that it can be great fun to switch your look. It may give you the confidence to embrace this bonus about wig wearing when you come back home!
Wigs During the Day Time on Holiday
This has been a learning curve for us as for most of our wig journey we have worn the same colour and styles and only over time came to the confidence of switching.
We have found wigs with a lot of latex in the base are the most uncomfortable to wear in hot weather (but are great for proper swimming). This knowledge was gained on Spanish holidays feeling like we had a plastic bag on our head and sweat running down our face!
Dark colour wigs are warmer to wear than blond wigs as they seem to attract the sunshine in the same way as dark clothes and it can feel like wearing a wool hat.
Blondes in synthetic wigs are lightweight and cooler and though our everyday wigs at home are hand tied, when on holidays wefted bases seem to be cooler to wear.
Also human hair wigs in humid climates can go the same way as bio hair – frizz and seem less sleek, whereas synthetic don’t tend to in our experience. The frizz is temporary, just like the frizz on bio hair would be.
Wigs for Adventurous Pursuits on Holidays
Often if we have hair loss whether partial or complete, boat trips, fairground rides, windy locations and adventurous pursuits are things we subconsciously risk assess and risk manage prior to the event. If you would not be comfortable without wearing your wig, we often have invented fixes over the years. Bands are great, double sided wig tape, those band swimming caps people use to protect their ears. Shorter wigs were always a must if speed or wind were in the equation or tying back your long wig hair. Where there is a will there is a way! That’s why old wigs are great to experiment with, try adding extra latex strips to attach tape, wig combs or clips if you have hair and you will find a solution. We try never to allow hair loss to stop us.
Wigs for Evenings on Holidays
This is when the transformative value of wigs really comes into play. There are some simply stunning wigs in more affordable heat-friendly and synthetic fibres which you may decide to keep for nights out and special occasions. Instant style and sophistication. No need to spend an hour getting sun cream and chlorine out of your hair if you have bio hair or out of your wig if you don’t before evenings on holidays. No need to style and holidays is the perfect time to experiment with styles with our summer wig tips and tricks.
