Customising Your Human Hair Wig

Human hair wigs in our opinion are the closest to your own hair that you will get. However, human hair wigs are often the hardest for people who have never worn a wig before to see the potential in. The synthetic ones are all wonderfully styled and there are literally thousands of colours and styles to choose from. So if you put one on and it is similar your previous style/hair it will instantly feel like you. Customising your human hair wig can make all the difference. In fact, customising your human hair wig allows you to achieve a truly individual look that reflects your own personality.

Customising Wigs

Put on a human hair wig and it is often just a length of hair with minimum style. For those of us who wear wigs everyday this is great as you can have YOUR style cut into it. The human hair wigs we supply have lovely handtied caps which some synthetics do not. However, we also supply synthetics with the kind of bases for comfort and realistic appearance we who wear wigs want too.

Human Hair vs Synthetic

Human hair will move naturally, feel soft against your skin and need minimal maintenance on a day to day basis. They are just a delight to wear in our opinion. Synthetic fibres deteriorate over time, but human hair wigs will behave just like your hair. There however is a time and place and some needs for which synthetic hair would be more suitable. For example if you are an avid walker out in all weathers. If you prefer spikey short styles or don’t want to have to style your hair, synthetic are good.

Many of us have a wig similar to our human hair wig for these very occasions. Very importantly if it is a first wig or topper it is sometimes best to start with synthetic. These have a lower price point if you think you aren’t 100% committed to wearing a wig.

Consider Length

If you like long hair, human hair wigs are best in our opinion. From personal experience, synthetic long lengths don’t last long. You always have to have a wide toothed comb in your bag to remove tatts during the day. When you move to a human wig from this daily hassle, it is really a joy. Moreover, customising your human hair wig is the best way to make it perfect for your lifestyle and preferences.

The human hair wig above started longer without a fringe and more layered and with a middle parting. Having a fringe cut in and a bob created a new style. Notice how the hair catches the light, each strand, in a way synthetic can never quite replicate in sunshine.

This short human hair wig is straight out of the box and though the style is just great as it is, having the fringe trimmed, a parting blow dried in and some volume would make it more individual. Customising your Human hair Wig provides endless possibilities and you can make the look uniquely yours.

Wear Your Wig Before Getting it Cut

We refer clients to three hairdressers experienced in cutting wigs and there is a reason for not doing it on site.

  1. You really need to take your wig home, get used to where you are going to wear it on your hairline. Yes, it is meant to be 4 fingers from your eyebrows but some people have naturally higher hairlines and some lower. It just looks odd and doesn’t suit their face shape if they wear it exactly 4 fingers from their eyebrows. Take it home and get used to it first. Once it is cut it won’t grow back!
  2. With your human hair wig dampen it and move the parting and play about with where it will go before getting a hairdresser to cut to the shape of your parting.
  3. Try tying it up and styling it – how long does it need to be for this? How does it move, how does it fall, which style would be best for this given your lifestyle. Then get it cut.
  4. Fringes – don’t leave it entirely to the hairdresser – ask for longer and thinner than you think. So many people make this mistake and you can always add more but can’t thin it or make it grow. Which comes back to point 1 – if you have it in the wrong place ie too far forward you might end up with a mini fringe! If you chop into a fringe on a wig for some reason it just looks like an uneven fringe so beware of snipping into it too much.
Alternatively
  1. If getting cut elsewhere be aware that many hairdressers were trained to thin wigs with razors and there is a fine line with this. You can end up with lots of what looks like split ends, the hair won’t move naturally and won’t hold a curl. Also as you thin out the mid and long lengths in an attempt to thin a wig, the amount of hair on the top remains the same but now that you have taken the weight off the ends, you may end up with a mushroom effect. Our advise – do as little as possible. Length reduction is fine and a few layers to frame the face and create movement. Fringes are great for softening hair lines. Please don’t loose the lustrous hair you have paid for by thinning it beyond recognition.

During the consultations we go over all of this and show you how to style it for up dos and tie back styles. We also go over maintenance too and this can be the difference in your human hair wig lasting for 6 months longer than if you didn’t know the do’s and don’ts.
