Advice Before Your Consultation

It Will Feel Different!

Often when we have thinning hair or patchy hair loss, we are unhappy with how it impacts our confidence. So, we come along for a consultation. It’s important to keep in mind some advice before your wig or topper consultation to set your expectations. Even though we would like to return to fuller hair, often we have become so used to seeing ourselves with less hair that it has become ‘us’. Almost everyone who puts on their first wig or topper will feel like it is too much hair. Even though this is why we are looking into a wig or topper.

This is natural; almost everyone feels this way! Advice before your wig or topper consultation can help ease these feelings. The person in the mirror with less hair has become your physical identity, and you have gotten used to seeing that person.

However, it really doesn’t take long to start seeing yourself with more hair objectively, maybe 10 or 15 minutes. It will be different, but it will (if we have done our job properly) be a good different. Read some of our Google Reviews in which customers have shared this experience before coming along.

Many of our customers bring friends or family along. A common reaction from them is how much of a positive impact it makes.

Advice Before Your Wig or Topper Consultation

The Thought of Meeting Others With Your New Hair…

There is that feeling of ‘different’ mentioned above for us. But then this is often accompanied by the worry of ‘different’ as seen by others. Therefore, below is some advice shared and experiences of other clients to prepare you.

If you have fine hair or patchy hair loss like I myself had for several years before it all departed, we kind of convince ourselves that others don’t notice. Part of the process is often accepting that they have noticed. Yes, it will be different to them, but overwhelmingly it has been a good different, as fed back from our clients.

People are generally kind, and the main comments you are likely to get are compliments. If we have had very little hair for a long time and then get more hair, people will notice. But it should be in a good way as it is just replacing the hair that is lost. Often clients say their nearest and closest friends, who can be honest with them, will comment that ‘they could have done it years ago’ as it makes such a difference to the person’s confidence.

How you navigate meeting others is entirely up to you. Whether you make no comment when a compliment is given and just say ‘thank you’ or share the reason for the difference is up to you.

From personal experience, people register the different and then forget about it after 5 minutes. This happens as that different has become ‘you’ to them. Oddly, the more you swap and change, the less people notice as you just become the person who swaps their hair. I have found over the years being open with those who know me about my hair loss makes it easier. They are more comfortable commenting on a change of style. Most people have something they themselves will be self-conscious about too. As mentioned earlier, it is just those first 5 minutes of meeting someone you know.

The Impact on Our Daily Routines

Often when we have hair loss or thinning hair, we have become masters of disguise in terms of hair positioning and clips and sprays and root sprays and fibre sprays. This adds to our morning routine. Many clients remark that their wig or topper has given them an extra hour in their day. It also provides confidence. They are so easy to put on.

I Really Am Not Ready for a Wig and Would Prefer a Topper

We do lovely ranges of toppers, so don’t worry, we won’t force you into wigs. However, toppers need secure and healthy hair to clip into. The area which you require covering will determine the size of the topper base. With bigger bases, there will obviously be more hair. Sometimes when people come, their hair loss may in fact be better served by a full wig. We will discuss the benefits of these with you.

We will always be guided by what feels best for you. Even if in our opinion a wig would best serve your needs, we will go down the avenue you feel most confident with. However, in doing so, we will be honest in making you aware of the pros and cons of whichever route you have taken. For example, with unstable hair loss, the hair your topper is going to clip into may not be there in the future. Also, as with all toppers or extensions (anything attached to your hair) hair loss can be exacerbated due to traction alopecia.

Sometimes, when people decide to go for a topper in these situations, it is a step in their journey. Often, clients say the topper gave them the confidence to go to a wig when it was needed or they were ready. We share much more advice during your wig or topper consultation.
