Changes
Having a wig business had been a dream for many years and my own hair loss and lifetime experience was the reason for this dream and interest. It is easier to speak to someone who has had a similar experience both for me when I was a customer, and I hope for my clients.
Menopause and the prospect of turning 50 was a major turning point in my life and career and alongside all the rather unwanted changes (I don’t need to list them as if you clicked on this page you know) , clarity was one of those. Clarity in that if I tried to fulfil my dream it would be now or never. It’s like a taking stock time and realising there is limited time ahead. Also confidence in myself.
Those were the silver linings of all the other changes. Oh and that I needn’t go silver myself if I didn’t want to!
For many women, one of the most unexpected symptoms of menopause is hair thinning. Hair that once felt thick and easy to style can suddenly appear finer, flatter, or more sparse, particularly around the parting, crown and temples. Even though hair loss was a challenge I had came to terms with as a child, all those years from now till then and my wig journey were a valuable experience in ‘getting’ how other women feel. In being able to reassure that if hair loss continues it can be something you can become comfortable with and start to see the pros in over time, like I do. I can also personally relate to the menopause, something which took me unawares in terms of the scope of it’s change.
Funny How Life Works Out
As I have said before, although there is an immune suppressant on the market now for my form of hair loss, for the first time in 40 years, the funny realisation for myself was… I don’t want to take anything for the rest of my life which may impact my physical health in order for hair to grow. At 50 my hair would be white and wiry and having worn lovely wigs for most of my life in a range of colours and textures, I don’t really want white and wiry hair thank you. Funny how life goes!
This change in hair for people encountering hair thinning for the first time can feel worrying, but it is actually quite common during menopause. That is not to diminish it in any way. Hair loss and it’s emotional impact are very very important and the latter is probably more profound for many of us than the former. The good news is that there are natural-looking solutions that can help restore volume, confidence and comfort.
The other thing to bear in mind is that not all hair loss during this period may be down to menopause. All the other causes of hair loss are still possible such alopecia, inflammation, psoriasis, thyroid conditions or anaemia. If you feel your hair loss or accompanying symptoms could be caused by something else, it is best to get them checked out in my opinion. That’s the thing with menopause, the symptoms are those of many other things too. After a while we may have experienced so many changes, we start to think everything is ‘just the menopause’ which in itself can be a bad idea to do.
At Beech Grove Wig Boutique, we regularly support women experiencing menopausal hair thinning, helping them discover beautiful wigs and hair toppers that look natural and feel comfortable to wear.
Why Hair Thins During Menopause
Hair changes during menopause are largely caused by hormonal changes, particularly the reduction in oestrogen and progesterone levels.
These hormones play an important role in supporting healthy hair growth. As levels decline, hair may begin to:
- Become finer in texture
- Grow more slowly
- Shed more easily
- Appear thinner around the crown or parting
Some women also experience an increase in androgens, which can contribute to a pattern of thinning similar to female pattern hair loss.
For many women, this results in gradual thinning rather than complete hair loss.
Where Menopausal Hair Thinning Usually Appears
Menopausal hair thinning often affects specific areas of the scalp rather than the whole head.
Common areas include:
- The centre parting becoming wider
- Thinning at the crown
- Reduced volume on the top of the head
- Hair appearing flatter or more fragile
Many women still have healthy hair around the sides and back, which means that solutions like hair toppers can blend beautifully with natural hair.
Hair Toppers for Menopausal Hair Thinning
A hair topper is designed to add volume and coverage exactly where it is needed most.
Unlike a full wig, a topper clips discreetly into your own hair and blends with it to create a very natural result.
Hair toppers can:
- Add natural-looking volume
- Conceal thinning at the crown or parting
- Restore body and movement to the hair
- Boost confidence without needing a full wig
Many women find that a well-chosen topper is one of the most natural and comfortable solutions for thinning hair during menopause.
Human Hair and Heat-Friendly Toppers
At Beech Grove Wig Boutique, we offer both human hair toppers and heat-friendly synthetic toppers, each with their own advantages.
Human Hair Toppers
Human hair toppers:
- Look incredibly natural
- Can be styled like natural hair
- Offer great versatility
Heat-Friendly Toppers
Heat-friendly fibre toppers:
- Hold their style beautifully
- Are lightweight and comfortable
- Require less day-to-day styling
During your consultation we can explore which option best suits your lifestyle, hair type and styling preferences.
The Importance of Colour Matching
Choosing the right colour is an important part of achieving a natural-looking result.
The right shade helps your topper:
- Blend seamlessly with your natural hair
- Complement your complexion
- Look completely natural
Sometimes a multi-tonal colour blend or subtle highlights can create the most realistic appearance.
A Private and Supportive Consultation
Experiencing hair thinning during menopause can feel emotional, particularly when the changes happen unexpectedly.
At Beech Grove Wig Boutique, consultations are private, relaxed and supportive. Many clients say they feel reassured simply speaking to someone who understands what they are going through.
During your appointment we will:
- Assess your hair and areas of thinning
- Explore suitable topper sizes and styles
- Match colours carefully
- Show you how to apply and care for your topper
Many clients are surprised by how natural and comfortable the right topper can feel.
