Wig Maintenance County Durham and North East

Quality and luxury human hair wigs by leading brands.

Human Hair Wigs

Each manufacturer will have different guidelines on life span and care.  Always follow the manufacturers guidelines regarding wig shampoos and wig accessories.  Generally with daily wear, from reputable brands such as those supplied on this site, human hair wigs may last for 6 to 12 months when worn daily and dependent on care.  If you take it off when at home, rotate wear between other wigs, this could be considerably longer.  Be wary of companies offering cheaply priced women's wigs, they will not be of good quality and will matt within a few washes.  The old adage if it looks too good to be true...

Human Hair Care and Maintenance

  •  Detangling - gently brush with a soft brush.
  •  Rinse and use the recommended wig shampoo using lukewarm running water to reduce tangling.
  •  Condition with one of our products designed for wigs.  It does matter!  Rinse.   Wrap in towel and gently dab - don't rub.
  • Protect with product recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Airdry is preferable.
  • Style.

Upon purchase with Beech Grove Wig Boutique we will go through all this. We can even show you what to do!  That's why we do consultations!

Advice

Be gentle with your human hair wig and you will have it for much longer.  That could be a few months or a year depending on you! The main issues I have found have come when I have brushed them too roughly during blow drying at the beginning of my journey.  I find the mellowing of colour or the oxidisation as it is called adds to the natural highlights on brown wigs over time.   Don't sleep in women's wigs and if you swim, use an old wig.  I discovered an old Supplex wig was amazing for swimming under water with a few bits of tape applied to the base and conditioner to the hair.  There is so much info to pass on that it really does help to speak to people who wear these pieces.  I can't imagine buying one on line for a first purchase!

Synthetic Wigs

Madelyn Wig Amore Collection

Synthetic Wigs

Each manufacturer of women's wigs will have different guidelines on life span again.  Always follow the manufacturers guidelines. Generally with daily wear, from reputable brands such as those supplied on this site,  synthetic wigs may last for 3 to 6 months when worn daily and again dependent on care.  If you take it off when at home, rotate wear between other wigs, this could be considerably longer.  An important thing you must look out for is putting your head anywhere near oven doors or sources of heat as the fibre will be damaged.  I remember years ago visiting a wig shop which had a huge old fashioned heater above the entrance door and it blasted your old hair on the way in and your new hair on the way out.  I could never work out whether they just didn't know as they themselves didn't wear wigs or it was a sales ploy! Please do not sleep in your wig as it will frizz prematurely! If you feel comfortable wearing a wig to bed, utilise an old one. Again be aware of very cheap price points on these as they may look fine on the photos but the bases and construction when they are delivered will not be the same as those from leading brands.  The old adage if it looks too good to be true again.

Synthetic Care and Maintenance

  • Every 7-10 days as part of your wig maintenance routine, if worn daily, start with a gentle brush with a wire wig brush starting from the tips and not pulling so hard the fibres are damaged. Remove all knots and tangles.
  •  Rinse and shampoo with the correct wig shampoo for your hairpiece with lukewarm water.  In the case of shorter pieces you submerge as per your wig instruction leaflet and with longer pieces you place under running water.  Never agitate the fibres.
  • You can lather a small amount of shampoo on your fingertips and gently put along the hairline if there is any makeup residue. Then rinse.
  •  Condition - using fingers smooth a small amount of the correct product for your piece through mid lengths and ends avoiding base.
  • Wrap in a towel and dab - don't rub!
  • Gently brush while wig is supported from mid lengths to ends.
  • Apply leave in product approved by manufacturer.
  •  Airdry.
  • Shake and go.

Advice

Be gentle with your synthetic wig and you will have it for much longer.  Do not pull at the fibres on wigs to prevent them from snapping or stretching.  I personally would not swim in a synthetic wig as the chlorine can affect the colour as well as the fibres.  Use an old human hair wig for swimming if possible. Gently brush out tangles at the end of each wear especially around the nape area as part of your daily wig maintenance routine.  You can also use products and wig accessories recommended by us to reduce tangling.   Shorter styles tend to last longer as friction from clothes is the main culprit in creating frizz. Again, there is so much info to pass on that it really does help to speak to people who wear these pieces.

High Heat Fibre Wigs

Raquel Welch Tru2Life wig.

High Heat Wigs

Each manufacturer of women's wigs will have different guidelines on the different fibres and different names for these type of fibres.  On this page you will find an overview of Tru2Life fibres. Your wig will have specific guidelines attached upon purchase. Other high heat fibres vary in their care and we will go over this during appointments. Generally with daily wear, from reputable brands such as those supplied by us,  these wigs may last for 3 to 6 months when worn daily and again dependent on care.  Longer styles may be shorter.  If you take it off when at home, rotate wear between other wigs, this could be considerably longer.

  • Take special care with lace front wigs and hairpieces. The lace is delicate and should not be tugged or pulled.
  • Sudden bursts of heat, such as opening an oven door, may damage heat-friendly synthetic fibre.
  • We do not recommend sleeping, showering, or swimming while wearing.
  • For longer wig styles, comb through nape area often using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
  • Hair colour cannot be used on synthetic fibre.

Tru 2 Life Care and Maintenance

For washing, every 7-10 days if worn daily, as part of your wig maintenance routine, start by gently removing tangles using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Do not use a brush. Start at the ends and slowly work toward the base to avoid damage. Do not overstretch or pull on the fibre of these wigs as it will damage it.  Always fall the instructions on the leaflet attached to your wig.

  1. Add manufacturer's guidelines of amount of shampoo to a washbasin of cool water. Hot water will damage Tru2Life synthetic fibre.
  2. Soak wig or hairpiece in washbasin for 3-5 minutes. Do not scrunch or agitate. For longer pieces put under cool running water.
  3. Rinse under cool running water until the water runs clear. Use a clean, colourfast towel to gently press out excess water. Do not twist or wring.
  4. Apply the advised type of conditioner for your piece and comb through using a wide-tooth comb starting at the ends. Rinse through. Do not apply directly to hand-tied areas as this may loosen the knots and cause shedding.
  5. For wavy/curly styles, be careful not to overstretch or pull on the fibre.
  6. Apply leave in conditioning spray dependent on manufacturers guidelines.
  7. The damp wig can then be placed on a Wig Stand to airdry.  Hand-tied hairpieces should instead dry flat on a colourfast towel to prevent any damage to the delicate construction. Do not dry wig on a solid form or mannequin head to avoid overstretching the cap.

Advice Styling

  • Shake to release fibre. Style with your fingers to achieve the desired look.
  • Heat friendly fibre can be curled, waved, flat-ironed or blown dry on a low heat to achieve a different texture. Once heat-styled, the wig or hairpiece will keep the new texture even after washing.
  • We recommend a setting of 140 degrees celsius and do not style on your head as the fibre can get very hot!  Do not use high heat straighteners as they will burn the fibres.
  • To straighten: take a 1-inch section and run a flat iron from the base to the ends. Allow to cool. Please check you have set the correct heat setting on a tiny section first!
  • To curl: wrap a 1-inch section around a curling iron and hold for 10 seconds. Carefully slide the iron out and hold the curl shape with a hairpin or clip until completely cool to set the curl.

Advice Wig Maintenance

  • After each wear, gently comb through the wig or hairpiece using your fingers or a wide toothed comb. Store on a wig stand.
  • To maintain wavy/curly textures, style only when the hair is completely dry using only your fingers. Do not comb or brush dry hair as this can loosen the texture.
  • After extended wear, matting and frizzing can occur. To detangle and recondition: wash as recommended, then comb through with a wide-tooth comb starting at the ends. Then style as desired as above.
