As the owner of Beech Grove Wig Boutique, though I gladly share aspects of my journey with my clients during consultations, writing a blog post is different.
Wearing a Wig for the First Time and Navigating Hairloss
The first time wearing a wig for those of us who have hair loss or are going through chemotherapy isn’t only about our first time wearing a wig. It will involve the preceding events. The hair loss and the reasons for this hair loss, either chemotherapy or alopecia or hormonal or hereditary or other causes and often it is an emotional time. We feel unprepared for the change in our appearance and it isn’t something we would have chosen – for our hair to depart!

For some it may be a temporary event, for others more long term, and for others uncertain either way. Most people feel a bit overwhelmed by it all. I know I did and many people I know felt the same way.
Coming to visit Beech Grove Wig Boutique is usually that first step, it’s about taking control and doing something when you may not have control of your hair loss.
Wearing a Wig for the First Time – Practical and Emotional Questions
Once you have got over the shock of trying that first wig or topper and then the second, then hopefully you start to see the old you reappearing or the old you with a gorgeous new hairstyle reappear. It’s the next steps and questions… Will it fall off? How often will I need to wash it? Practical questions. But also emotional ones too. Will the people I know notice? What should I say? The advice I always give is that it is only nerve wrecking that first time you wear it and only for the first 5 minutes. Once people have registered the difference or not registered the difference, life and conversations move on and the new you becomes you.
On a practical aside, how to feel comfortable and confident wearing a wig for the first time is often down to finding the right wig, the right fibre, the right cap and the right colour. We then go over the best way to secure the piece and this knowledge comes from actually wearing the pieces ourselves over many years in real life. Going on holiday, going to the gym, going on a cruise, everyone’s questions will be different and we will answer these during your consultation. It doesn’t end when you leave. We are always here for the questions everyone has as they navigate those next steps. It is a privilege to be able to use our own experience to help others in their journey and also to see them much later on when they return or they send an update of how it has impacted their life positively.
